http://images.arianchen.de/soft15khz/english.gif

Here anybody using Soft-15KHz can post his/her video adapter, driver version and maybe a comment.

However, please keep this thread spam-free.

Notes: MAME32 seems to have problems with tripple buffering enabled. Other emulators (WinUAE, VirtualNES, SNES9X) run fine.

http://www.jayswing.com/Radeon_HD3850_AGP_Powercolor.jpg

Hi guys,

Here is my contribution (Entschuldigung, Sprache night deutsh :))

Card: ATI Radeon HD3850 AGP (Powercolor)
Driver: 8.582.0.0 (Don't remember which catalyst version it was, though I only tried cat8.10, cat8.12, cat9.2 and cat9.10. That should narrow the search if you really want to try the exact same ones!)

Result: Works / Funktioniert

I used these modelines (they were posted earlier in this thread):
modeline '288x240@59.885' 7.12 288 332 392 448 240 243 246 265 -hsync -vsync
modeline '296x240@59.941' 7.12 296 338 392 448 240 243 246 264 -hsync -vsync
modeline '304x240@59.305' 7.12 304 344 392 448 240 243 246 264 -hsync -vsync
modeline '320x240@59.014' 7.12 320 350 392 448 240 242 245 264 -hsync -vsync
modeline '336x240@59.749' 7.12 336 356 392 448 240 243 246 264 -hsync -vsync

It seems like the HD3850 is no exception to the rule: pixelclock of ATI cards are tricky.
I tried a ton of different modelines before having some that would actually let me see a clear image!
Seems like pixelclock=7.12 is the way to go!

Yours,

Card : ATI Radeon HD 4350 works without dongle with Catalyst 12.3.

Both Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT and GT 440 doesn't work, even with dongle.

I have two questions : both 9800 GT and GT 440 shows "duplicate" images, meaning that they doesn't support 15 Khz. I've tested them with Nvidia 182.06 drivers, which apparently support 15Kzh settings. Can someone confirm that these drivers are really OK for 15Khz ? And if not, which version is "good" ?

I also bought and tested a MSI HD 4650 with 1Gb DDR3 under Catalyst 10.3 and 12.3, but it failed, with or without dongle. It surprised me, because page 5 of this thread a similar HD 4650 was succesfully tested. Can someone confirm that some HD4650 models are "different" from others and though don't support 15Khz ? Or is it a Catalyst issue, which means I should try another drivers version ?

Thanks for all, and of course thanks SailorSat for this wonderful tool !!

Hi James West!

I heared here on the board that NVidia cards generally cause problems with soft15kHz. Just skip them altogether. I had a GT440 from PAlit and NOTHING - nor driver, nor Powerstrip, nor dongle - got it to work. SailorSat recommended the HD4650 and it worked with Catalyst 10.3 like a charm! Its powerful enough for Street Fighter 4 (which on a TV looks good enough) and handles MAME perfectly!

I don't think your driver is the problem...maybe your TV doesn't work with the card....?!? And yes, there are different versions of the HD4650. At least, when I bought the card on eBay, they sold version with DVI, VGA, TV-out and possibly HDMI in different combinations. Try asking in another thread with giving your specific setup.

I hope that helped,

regards madef

Hi!

The videocard you got ist just fine. I player Super SFIV Arcade Edition (it is the better version since you can freely configure the controls as opposed to the "normal" SFIV) with this card and it works great. As far as soft15kHz goes, I think there is misunderstanding...by hitting the 15kHz, 25kHz or 31 kHz button you just install more different resolutions that enable an 15kHz, 25kHz or 31 kHz output. Normally your videocard is limited to just a few reolutions that are all 31 kHz. Now, if you want a different resolution that is 15 kHz (this is mandatory for CRT-TVs and Arcade monitors AND it looks better for old games!), you need to add the new resolutions and enable them. The "original" drivers from your video card don't give you these....soft15kHz expands the driver to these new resolutions. That's the trick. So, if your monitor only "digests" 31kHz you probably won't need soft 15kHz. Anyway, by hitting the 31kHz button in the software there may be added new 31kHz resolutions that suit you better than the "original" ones. Just try it. Problem is, I don't know your monitor. Please ask someone, who is an expert for monitors. I use a Sony KV-29Xd5 TC-screen as monitor in my cab.

A tip aside: Use Catalyst 10.3 as driver for your HD4650. It worked great for me! After installing soft15kHz, I played SFIV very nicely on my TV using soft 15kHz. The reolution I used for SF: 640x480 interlaced. For Mame I used 320x240. SFIV also worked under 320x240. The best thing with the HD4650 is that I have installed 2 monitors: One for Windows 7 (to configure the system and stuff) which I run in a high resolution and as a second one the TV-set, which I use for gaming.

Thanks madef, I really appreciate your quick response in this matter and sorry for bothering you too much as i am really new in it and Sega naomi universal is my first cabinet and i dont want to screw that on an early stage 0-), so from your answer that if my monitor is only 31khz than i dont need to install 31khz from the soft15khz and can use the native 640x480 resolution. but if i need to use mame than i need to add lower resolutions with works well with those earliers games i love the most :p. i think my monitor is Nanao MS-2932-S only digest 31khz if i install lower resolution is there any harm to my monitor or not, i know you dont have much experience as stated but i dont know much people around

2) Also, do you prefer AMD or nVIDIA? (success rate) - should I get nVIDIA or AMD ? (I hear that AMD is more compatible.)

3) What about drivers? Do new drivers (for AMD or nVIDIA) would work, or do I need to look for older ForceWare (if I get a nVidia) or AMD drivers?

Thanks!

Card: NVidia GeForce 8600GT PCI-E
Driver: ForceWare 176.19
Result: Works with Flaws / Funktioniert halbwegs

Notes: Needs the Soft-15kHz-Dongle (or any other valid EDID source) for resolutions below 512x384.
Anmerkung: Benötigt den Soft-15kHz-Dongle (oder eine andere gültige EDID Quelle) für Auflösungen unter 512x384.

P.S. Re-Checked 14.12.2008 with Dongle

Hi i bought couple of VGA cards as mentioned on the compatibility list, like HD4650, 8600gt as mentioned, but i am having some trouble on 8600gt on windows 7, my arcade monitor is as mentioned earlier 31khz one and can display 640x480, it works fine with hd4650 with soft15khz but when i change the card to 8600 gt the screen is like a junk and flickering too much, cant see any thing, it happens when i install the driver for it. without driver it is fine i dont know what to do..

help is needed as i am really new to arcade machines by the way i have naomi universal cab if it helps.

Are there any USB graphics cards that will work? I have a small computer that would be perfect to run MAME on my Sony PVM monitor, but it has built-in Intel graphics and no room for an extra graphics card. It would be great to just plug in a USB 2.0 graphics card and run this software.

Hallo SailorSat,
